What is an O-ring?

An O-ring is a toroidal-shaped seal. This is a technical term to explain that this part is a geometric solid in the shape of a tube bent back on itself. This product is also known as an o-ring. It is a rubber gasket that provides an excellent seal on metal fittings in both static and dynamic applications. They are used in a multitude of applications including pumps and motors, valves and taps, tanks and hoses, laboratory equipment, pressure vessels, medical equipment, etc.

What material should I choose for O-rings?

These products are made of different materials. The three main materials are NBR (butadiene rubber), EPDM (ethylene rubber), and FPM (fluorinated rubber).

  • The NBR (NITRILE) material is mainly used for contact with oils and hydrocarbons from -40 °C to +110 °C. This model is also compatible with water.
  • The FPM (VITON) material can also be in contact with oils and hydrocarbons. It is more suitable for high-temperature applications as it can withstand temperatures from -20 °C to +200 °C.
  • EPDM is often used for contact with brake fluid and water. In terms of temperature, it can withstand from -50 °C to +150 °C.
